Warehouse Management Systems Improve Efficiency What is it? Order processing is the system or work-flow related to the packing, picking and delivery of your packed items to your final destination and is a critical element of order completion. Most warehousing operations are called either "distributed warehouses" or "warehousing centers". There are also warehouse picking operations and "point of sale" systems. The term is used most commonly in the food industry but can be applied to any industry requiring inventory management. Inventory management systems help in keeping track of your stock levels. This helps minimize the risk of overstocked items that can be quickly retrieved. An important component of a warehouse management system is an inventory control and picking system. This system is usually processed via a computer network. A variety of technologies are available for inventory control and picking applications and they include desktop software, web based applications and mobile devices such as smart phones. Many companies use their own brand of inventory control and picking application and there are several third party inventory control and picking applications available. The picking machine involves mechanical devices such as pallets, revolving belts, trolleys and conveyor systems. Pickers automate the picking process by moving the containers through the warehouse in a completely efficient path. There are many different types of machines and each one performs differently. For example, the conveyor belt has a different feel and action than a roller or a truck. Each type of picking machine or equipment has its advantages and disadvantages and some are more efficient than others. It is important that the warehouse worker understand the differences among these machines and select the one most suitable for their needs. Pick and pack operations are integral for many companies throughout the supply chain and are essential for smooth warehouse operations. They improve productivity, increase profit margins, reduce costs and protect the environment by reducing freight costs. They improve the efficiency of inventory control and picking processes and they allow a company to service fewer clients at any given time. If logistics allows a company to handle more orders at any given time, it increases overall revenue. The increased profit margin also allows the company to expand into new areas and hire more employees to meet the demand. With increased profits, there is also an increase in employee motivation and employee turnover rates are reduced. There are a number of different methods that are used to automate the order picking and packing processes and these include the following: automation of the pick and pack process, use of computer technology, use of non-invasive technology such as RFID tags, voice recognition software, machine learning systems and other similar technologies. Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages. Some are more reliable than others and some are much more efficient than others. The more efficient methods have the potential to save a company thousands of man hours per year. In some cases, using robotics such as the pallet stacker or robotic conveyor can be beneficial. These warehouse management systems help to eliminate many types of manual labor including stocking, bagging, and pick and placing activities. Using a combination of Warehouse Management System(WMS) and P&P systems can lead to increased productivity, improved efficiency, reduction of labor costs and a safer working environment. If a company uses automation, it not only helps to save time, but also increases productivity and lowers labor costs. The increased efficiency can be achieved through automation of different aspects of the pick and pack process including, but not limited to, filling, loading, finding and removing, and transporting. WMS and P&P systems can also be used to improve on the accuracy of the fill and load process by recording fill information more accurately and consistently than the current manual methods. The accuracy of the records provided by the pick and pack system can be further improved by the use of automation. fulfillment that are looking to reduce the number of errors in their warehouse management systems should look into automated systems that make use of the latest technology, such as radar scanning and infrared technology. These technologies can greatly reduce the number of errors in the documentation process while reducing the amount of time that is spent manually filling and loading boxes. In addition, companies that are using WMS and P&P software should look to automate as much of the process as possible to improve efficiency.
